American Glehnia     &     Fleshy Jaumea

The CRD environmental assessment 2015 claims that both the Amecian Glehnia and Fleshy Jaumea are confirmed resident in island View Beach.  See here

Following is a concatenation of the CRD "Fact Sheet"

Neither of these plants is mentioned in the CRD's species at risk presentation.

We have been unable to find independent confirmation of this claim by the CRD that these two plants are "confirmed resident" in island View Beach Regional Park.   In fact, a report by Matt Fairbarns of Aruncus provided to the CRD 5 months before they made this claim, specifically addressed these two plants and questioned their existence in the park.

"The report of Fleshy Jaumea is suspect – there is no precise information confirming its presence at Island View Beach and there is little or no suitable habitat within the regional park. It is known to occur in adjacent lands but the report for Island View Beach is probably a mapping error created by the vague nature of old records. American Glehnia is also known from adjacent lands but neither has been reported from Island View Beach Regional Park."

We made numerous requests of the CRD to provide confirmation of their claim these two species are confirmed resident in Island View Beach Regional Park and they have not provided this to us.  To the contrary, we did receive from the CRD an email from the BC Conservation Data Centre dated February 13, 2015, saying:

"Lea relayed to me that you needed some help identifying if Glehnia and Jaumea were in the park."

The BC CDC writer said the American Glehnia was mapped from data from M. Fairbarns in 2014.  We have the report from Fairbarns 2014 however, and he is specific that "American Glehnia is also known from adjacent lands but neither has been reported from Island View Beach Regional Park."

And the writer says about the Fleshy Jaumea that "We have much less precise location information for this species, 'Collected from the inland side of sand spit on Island View Beach'  Ogilvie 1979."

There is no sand spit at Island View Beach Regional Park.  The sand spit referred to is Cordova Spit which is 1km north of the park.   And we have the report from Fairbands 2014 above

Conclusion:  The CRD had the Fairbarns 2014 report in July 2014, informing then that neither the Fleshy Jaumea nor the American Glehnia existed in the park.  These species should never have been claimed by CRD Parks as confirmed resident in Island View Beach Regional Park.
